Abstract
The total global business worth of sports is around US$600 billion. The retail worth of sporting goods has been estimated to be US$120 billion of which apparel, footwear and equipment accounts for 42%, 25% and 33% respectively. Australias sports and recreation industry involves over 11,000 businesses and produces goods and services valued at more than $12 billion. They are leaders in the design and production of niche sports products such as bicycles, hockey sticks, tennis balls and others. The generated income from exports to Asia alone is about $600million. The design and production of sports products requires research into the needs of athletes/users, performance parameters, biomechanics and sensory perception. The products are optimized through advanced design, advanced production materials including polymers, composites, smart materials and nanotechnologies, and new manufacturing processes. Companies involved in sports spend millions in research and employ engineers specializing in computer-aided design and analysis, computational fluid dynamics and materials in order to gain a competitive edge of their products. Engineers, thus play an important role in sports.
