c. By getting ready with answers for such questions, you will be able to respond effectively
and confidently, in turn, creating a positive ambience. Remember that the real confidence
comes from your preparedness.
d. Acknowledge the weaknesses (rather limits) of your research.
e. You are allowed to ask for clarifications wherever needed. You can clarify by ‘Do you
mean…….’ Get some time to think of the answer, ‘Although I do not have the exact answer
but…..
f. If you really not able to answer a question:
•
Be honest. You definitely have a general understanding of the question, voice it out,
even if it is not very specific in nature
; rather than be quiet. If it relies on literature that
you are not familiar with, thank the examiner for the valuable suggestions.
•
Do not panic, again the real confidence comes from your preparedness.
•
Remember you are engaging in a debate with equals. Instead find out from the
examiners’ views on how to solve it.
•
Can it be addressed in the final version of your thesis?
•
For instance, by creating a new sub-section or adding a paragraph to discuss the
matter raised.
•
If it is something you are already aware of, prepare your discussion on why it does not
undermine your whole thesis.
•
Showing you are aware of this will prove that you have good critical skills. But do not
volunteer flaws unnecessarily.
