TOPIC 3 : MOTIVATION BEHIND THE RESEARCH WORK
3.1
JUSTIFYING THE RESOLVED RESEARCH GAP
The gap can be easily spotted by an exhaustive literature review.
a. Demonstrate that your work has extended the existing knowledge of the field.
•
You have contributed to the enhancement of the current state, taking the knowledge to
a certain height.
b. Demonstrate that your work has filled the existing gap, either filling up the entire or part
of the remaining gap.
•
Stress on how your findings help in filling the vacuum; the vacuum that has been
existed by failing in considering one or few aspect(s) in the previous studies.
c. Demonstrate that your work has a different view/perspective than the present
understanding.
•
Show that your work has exhibited
another side
of the field that has not been or rarely
reported. Gap can be easily spotted not only by an exhaustive literature review, but
with your continuous and repeated focus on your research locus. Collect and connect
all the possible benefits of your research findings; in term of economic, social,
environment and so on.

DEMONSTRATING THE STRENGTH OF RESEARCH SOLUTIONS
The required strength to stand firm in viva lies almost entirely on your contribution to resolve
a real problem. Make your findings measurable, show how your findings contribute to the
betterment of the field. Too general statement usually of no help instead be precious by
providing numerals.
•
What are your
very
contributions?
•
What were the motivations?
•
Why did you approach it in this way?
•
What do your results mean?
•
The research is worth investigating?
•
What are the current
demanding
issues to be solved?
•
Always explore other aspects of your research. At many occasions, such exploration
creates fresh ideas that lead to new insight.
